A SHORT & CONCISE HISTORY OF DISASTERADIO

Hi! DISASTERADIO is a band from New Zealand consisting of LUKE ROWELL (b. 1983) and an excellent COMPUTER. Let's combine pop melody and electronics with a dash of genre referentialism!

I've always been fascinated with electronic music from a very young age after realising the cosmic connection between Walter Carlos's Switched On Bach and Commodore 64 game soundtracks. I love the idea that something "fake" can be more real, beautiful and genuine than something "real".

DISASTERADIO was formed in 1999 when I began to share the music I'd been making on mp3.com and through extremely good luck and a little bit of hard work I've been on over 10 tours of New Zealand and three of Europe, the first one after being asked by Hans Nieswandt to play an NZ showcase of electronic music in Berlin.

Although I have classistic, even nostalgic notions about electronic music, I'm not interested in retro: rather I like the idea that culture is made up of culture.

I started out by putting out CD-Rs on a local punk zine distro. My 7th and latest release was put out by my good buddy Blink on A Low Hum in New Zealand. It got the highest spot for a NZ album on Real Groove's top 100 releases of 2007. I've also released cassettes and a super limited edition single on Atari 2600 cartridge.

My favouritest bands ever are Sparks, Kraftwerk, Devo, Pere Ubu, Ariel Pink and Add N To (X).

Also, Italo-Disco has got to be some of the best music of all time.

My favouritest video games ever are Ultima 7 and Underworld, We Love Katamari, Railroad Tycoon 2, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, Shadow Of The Colossus, Tetris and QIX.
